Rose garden

At the lowest point of the Lower East Garden, there is now a large lawn. In 1798–99, Duke Friedrich II created the Grosser See (large lake) there with luxuriant rose bushes and thick woodland on its shores. A rustic Chinese house stood on a little island in the middle of the lake, which the royal household reached by way of a tuff-clad arched bridge.

When the Rose Garden was laid out, priority was placed on plants with the greatest possible resistance to fungal diseases (rust fungus, black spot and mildew). Other criteria included the form of the plants, the flower shape, flower colour and scent. The perfect blend of roses and shrubs is another characteristic of the garden.

A generous legacy left by Anna Grammer of Ludwigsburg made a significant contribution to the creation of the Rose Garden.
