Hedge Gardens

The gardens around Ludwigsburg palace had a different appearance during the era of Dukes Eberhard Ludwig and Carl Eugen. The South Garden, in particular, which they laid out as a parterre and pleasure garden, was divided into several areas that were noted for their complex designs.

The four hedge gardens in the parterre offer visitors an insight into baroque garden design. Pruned hornbeam hedges alternate with ornamental sections of low box trees and coloured gravel or elegant roses.

The hybrid tea roses boast large, densely filled flowers, which often have a powerful scent, while the bedding roses, such as floribundas and polyanthas, show off all their glory in exquisite varieties. In the latter group of roses, the flowers grow in clusters on the stems, creating a highly prolific and colourful effect.
